Filósofo francés. Educado en una escuela jesuita, se convirtió al catolicismo romano, pero después volvió a su fe original calvinista. Debido a sus planteamientos religiosos, perdió sus cargos de profesor, primero en Sedán y después en Rotterdam. Estaba convencido de que el razonamiento filosófico conducía al escepticismo universal, pero que la naturaleza impulsaba al hombre a adoptar creencias basadas en la fe ciega. El grueso de su Diccionario histórico y crítico (1697) consiste en citas, anécdotas, comentarios y anotaciones eruditas que desvirtúan hábilmente cualquier creencia ortodoxa cristiana expresada en sus artículos; fue condenado por las autoridades religiosas. Su oblicuo método de crítica subversiva fue adoptado más tarde por los colaboradores de La Enciclopedia de Denis Diderot.
